Judge opens trial against man who assaulted Mexican president

This Saturday, a control judge determined to open a trial against Uriel ‘N’ for the crime of sexual abuse against President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, which occurred last Tuesday on the streets of the Historic Center of Mexico City. In a hearing for compliance with an arrest warrant, the Public Ministry made the accusation against the subject, who will remain in justified preventive imprisonment in the North Reclusory, and two months were established for the closure of the complementary investigation. On Friday, Rivera was criminally prosecuted for the crime of sexual abuse, committed against another woman. A judge ordered the start of a trial against the 33-year-old man for touching a 25-year-old young woman, also last Tuesday on the streets of downtown Mexico City, an aggression that occurred after the same sexual attack on Sheinbaum. The judicial hearing took place this Friday in the country's capital, solely due to the young woman's complaint, after which the accused was arrested after the victim reported him to agents who were monitoring him following the attack on the president. On Tuesday, when Sheinbaum was walking through the center of the capital and greeting some citizens, a man in an apparent state of drunkenness approached her, tried to kiss her on the neck, and then hug her from behind. The aggression was recorded in a video that went viral on social networks. Hours later, federal authorities confirmed that the aggressor, identified as Uriel ‘N’, was arrested and remanded to the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office for Sexual Crimes. Penitentiary sources indicated that Sheinbaum was a victim of an outright sexual abuse crime, according to the Penal Code for Mexico City, but at the time the crime occurred, no assistant close to the head of state intervened. On Wednesday, at her press conference, Sheinbaum announced that she had filed a complaint against the subject, although she acknowledged that she hesitated to do so, but did so to 'send a message to all women and all men'. The attack on Sheinbaum has generated strong indignation in the country due to the persistence of sexual crimes and violence against women, which reaches the highest authority in the country. Likewise, the dissemination of images of the attack has also generated controversy about the limits of freedom of expression, public interest, and digital violence typified by the Olimpia Law. In Mexico, more than 70% of women over 15 years old have experienced at least one type of violence, such as sexual (48%), psychological (52%), or physical (35%), according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). However, organizations and authorities estimate an underreporting or 'black figure' of more than 90% due to cases that are not reported.
